THE MECHANICS OF SCENT, A TRAVELLING EXHIBITION BY FRAMA
DESIGN
Previously presented in Paris, Los Angeles, and New York, FRAMA’s exhibition The Mechanics of Scent arrived in Copenhagen, inviting visitors to reconsider one of the most overlooked dimensions of design. Expanding on its original premise, that scent is as integral to architecture as light, material, or form, the exhibition explored the powerful role fragrance plays in shaping our experience of space.
Installed throughout FRAMA Spaces, the exhibition evolved through a new series of Scent Sculptures developed in collaboration with artist David Gardner. Across eight works, fragrance is activated through movement, materiality, and simple mechanical systems, transforming the Studio Store and Apartment 57A into an immersive sensory landscape.
In one window, scented paper forms move gently through the action of a motor, dispersing fragrance as they sway. Elsewhere, clay spheres travel through pools of scent in a playful kinetic installation. Throughout the exhibition, paper, wood, clay, steel, and air become tools for carrying aroma through space, revealing the subtle mechanisms behind an experience we often take for granted.
The exhibition arrives at a moment when design culture remains overwhelmingly visual. By contrast, The Mechanics of Scent asks visitors to engage with a dimension of the home that cannot be photographed or fully translated through a screen. Instead, it foregrounds atmosphere, memory, and presence, yet shaping our experience of space as profoundly as furniture, lighting, or architecture.
Alongside the exhibition, FRAMA introduced the Union Series, a new collection by designer Michael Antrobus at the Danish Art Workshops. Developed through experimentation with a semi-round profile, the collection explores balance, restraint, and simplicity, reflecting the same quiet sensibility that defines the installation. A preview of the forthcoming 01 Soft Seating Series further extended the dialogue between object, environment, and everyday living.
At the centre of the exhibition is Apothecary, FRAMA’s signature scent, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. With notes of sandalwood, cedarwood, and ylang ylang, the fragrance draws inspiration from St. Pauls Apotek, the historic Copenhagen pharmacy that houses FRAMA’s headquarters and Studio Store.
The Mechanics of Scent is an exploration of how we inhabit space through all of our senses. By giving form to something inherently intangible, FRAMA offers a timely reminder that some of the most powerful elements of design are those we cannot see.
